Lucida vs Gizmo
Gizmo is an AI flashcard app with iPhone and Android apps that turns PDFs, videos and notes into cards and quizzes, with daily limits on its free plan. Lucida has no App Store app yet, but it has no hearts, lets you export everything, makes cards from your files (3 makes a day on Free), and lets your own AI (Claude, ChatGPT) make and edit cards too.

The short version
Gizmo is built for speed on a phone. You drop in a PDF, a video or a photo of your notes, and its AI turns them into a deck and a quiz. It wraps studying in points, streaks and leagues.
Lucida is calmer and more portable. There are no hearts. Lucida makes cards from your files too, your own AI app can make them through your Lucida link, and you can take every card out whenever you like.
Where Gizmo is better
- Phone apps. iPhone, iPad and Android apps, plus a web app. Lucida has no App Store app yet and works in a browser.
- More AI built in. Magic Import turns PDFs, recordings, photos, PowerPoint files, websites and YouTube links into cards, and an AI tutor can teach a topic step by step. You don’t need a separate AI subscription. Lucida makes cards from many of the same things, but not from a web page address, and its own AI is used for making cards, live games from a topic and Explain.
- Game-style study. XP, levels, leagues, streaks and Monster Hunt. Lucida has a Stats page on Pro, and points appear only in live games.
- Live games with no player cap. Gizmo says there is no maximum. Lucida Live takes up to 60.
- More card types made for quizzing, including matching and ordering. Lucida has four card kinds and five Learn question kinds.
- A big public library. Its App Store listing says 1,000,000+ free public flashcards.
Where Lucida is better
- Your data out. Gizmo’s help center says exporting cards and decks isn’t available yet. Lucida exports every deck as CSV and everything, reviews included, as JSON.
- No hearts. Gizmo’s free plan has hearts (15, then a 10-minute wait) and two Magic Imports a day. Lucida’s free plan has no hearts and no waits while you study. Its card maker allows 3 makes a day, and your own AI can make as many cards as you want.
- Any AI, and it can edit. Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP app makes cards, fixes them, writes quiz questions and sees what is due. You choose what it may do and can check its cards first.
- Privacy. Lucida’s policy says it doesn’t use your cards to train AI models. Gizmo’s notice says it may use personal information to train the models behind its AI features.
