Why people look for a Quizlet alternative
- QuizletThe biggest library and teacher tools
- LucidaLearn mode, spaced repetition and live games, free
- KnowtFree learn-style study modes
- AnkiFree and deeper
- BrainscapeFree for your own text cards
- GizmoAI and live games
Quizlet’s help center says Learn is for Plus subscribers, with a free study session to try it. Test gives one free practice test per set, and Study Guides and Practice Tests have limited free access. The free plan also shows ads, and offline studying is listed with the paid features.
Students whose teacher invites them get free Learn and Test on the sets their teacher adds, so the limits matter most for people studying on their own.
Lucida: free Learn mode, spaced repetition and live games
Lucida’s free plan has unlimited decks and cards, FSRS reviews, Learn mode (five kinds of questions made from your cards), live games for up to 60 friends, sharing, making cards from your files, pictures, recordings, YouTube links or a topic (3 makes a day), and import and export. There are no ads. Your own AI (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor or any MCP app) can also make and edit cards through your Lucida link. Pro is $5.99 a month or $49.99 a year for Stats, exam dates, themes, unlimited pictures and sounds, and 30 card makes a day.
What you give up: Quizlet’s library (Lucida’s is new and small), phone apps with offline study and Quizlet’s teacher tools.
Knowt: the closest look-alike
Knowt lets you study every mode on your own sets for free, has a Chrome extension and a paste route for bringing Quizlet sets across, and builds AI in (note summarizers, a tutor, exam prep), with limits on the free plan and ads until you pay. It also has Knowt Play for live games and analytics for teachers.
Anki, Brainscape and Gizmo
Anki is free on computers and Android and much deeper, with add-ons and offline study, but it has no games built in and its iPhone app is $24.99. Brainscape is free for your own text cards with no ads, and keeps images, sounds and export for Pro. Gizmo has phone apps, AI built in and Gizmo Live, with hearts and daily import limits on the free plan.
Move your Quizlet sets
On quizlet.com, open a set you made, open the more menu, choose Export, then Copy text. Quizlet only exports sets you made, as text without images.
Then paste the text into Lucida’s Import cards, Knowt’s Import manually, Brainscape’s Paste List (or a CSV file), or Gizmo’s Magic Import (which takes a Quizlet link). Anki reads text files too, after you save the text as a file.

- 2Export, then Copy textOpen the more menu
- 3Paste the textInto the new app’s import
When Quizlet is still the right pick
Stay with Quizlet if you need the biggest library of ready-made sets, iPhone and Android apps that work offline, teacher tools, or Classic Quizlet Live. Quizlet’s App Store listing says over 60 million people use it.

Questions
What is the best free alternative to Quizlet?
It depends on what you need. Lucida is free with Learn mode, FSRS spaced repetition, live games and no ads. Knowt lets you use every study mode on your own sets for free, with limited AI. Anki is free and much deeper, with add-ons and offline study. Quizlet keeps the biggest library.
Is Quizlet still free?
Partly. You can make and study sets for free, with ads. Learn is for Plus subscribers after a free study session, Test gives one free practice test per set, and Study Guides and Practice Tests are limited (Quizlet help center, September 2026).
Which Quizlet alternative has Learn mode for free?
Lucida’s Learn mode is free, with multiple choice, true or false, fill in the blank, matching and typing questions. Knowt’s free plan includes Learn, Practice Test, Spaced Repetition, Match and Flashcards on your own sets.
Is there a Quizlet alternative with spaced repetition?
Yes. Lucida uses FSRS, Anki offers SM-2 and FSRS, Knowt has a Spaced Repetition mode, Brainscape uses its own 1 to 5 confidence system, and Gizmo schedules cards automatically. Quizlet also has a spaced repetition option, on its website only.
Can I transfer my Quizlet sets to another app?
Yes, for sets you made. Export the set on quizlet.com (more menu, Export, Copy text) and paste it into the new app. Images aren’t exported, and you can’t export sets you copied from someone else.
Is there a Quizlet alternative with AI?
Yes. Knowt, Brainscape and Gizmo build AI into the app, with limits on their free plans. Lucida does too, for making cards from your files (3 makes a day on Free), and your own AI app (Claude, ChatGPT, Cursor) can also make and edit cards through your Lucida link. Quizlet itself has Ask Quizlet and Smart Assist, and apps in ChatGPT and Claude.
What can I use instead of Quizlet Live?
Lucida’s Live (free, up to 60 friends, join with a code), Gizmo Live (free, no maximum), Knowt Play (several game modes) and Kahoot (built for schools and events) all do live games. Quizlet’s Classic Live is a matching game started from a teacher-identified account.
Which Quizlet alternative is best for teachers?
It depends. Knowt lets teachers assign sets and see per-student analytics, Kahoot is built for live games and reports in schools, and Quizlet has teacher plans, assignments and free Learn and Test for students whose teacher invites them. Lucida has live games and decks you share by link, but no assignments, gradebook or per-student reports.
Is Anki better than Quizlet?
Anki is built for long-term memory and control: it is free on computers and Android, works offline and has add-ons. Quizlet has a far bigger library of shared sets, teacher tools and live games, and limits Learn and Test on its free plan.
